David Thewlis Wheeler was born on March 20, 1963 in Blackpool. He is the son of Maureen and Alec Raymond Wheeler and given the name David. Both of her parents were employees in the store owned by her father. He is the younger of two siblings and also has an older brother. While still a teenager, he was a member of rock band QED and punk rock band Door 66, in which he played lead guitar. He was educated at Highfield High School, located in the Marton area of Blackpool. After that, he attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and graduated there in 1984.

Thewlis appeared in just one episode of the 1980s sitcom called “Up the Elephant and Round the Castle,” but he only had a small role. In the 1985 episode of the British sitcom Only Fools and Horses titled “It’s Only Rock and Roll”, he also made a guest appearance playing the role of a member of Rodney’s temporary band. It was in the play Buddy Holly that he made his professional acting debut at the Regal Theater in Greenwich.
Thewlis received the Best Actor award for his performance in Naked (1993; directed by Mike Leigh), in which he played the title character, Johnny, a homeless, highly intelligent, embittered and rambling street philosopher. For this performance, Thewlis was recognized as the best actor by the National Society of Film Critics (USA), the London Film Critics Circle, the Evening Standard, the New York Film Critics’ Circle and the Cannes Film Festival. The same year, he made his debut in front of television viewers as a sex offender named James Jackson in the third season of Prime Suspect, alongside Helen Mirren and Ciarán Hinds. Before that, her first TV appearance was on an episode of Valentine Park.
During the decade of the 1990s, Thewlis appeared in a number of films, the majority of which were fantasy and period pieces. He participated in the audition for the character of Quirinus Quirrell in the film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, directed by Chris Columbus, but Ian Hart was finally chosen for the role. He was cast as Professor Remus Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004, despite being unavailable for the first film in the series. Because he was director Alfonso Cuarón’s first choice for the role, he did not have to go through the audition process. Thewlis portrayed the character in the other four films in the franchise.
