Coss Marte enjoyed the good life in New York until 2009, earning huge sums of money as a drug lord. But his detention in federal prison and subsequent arrest changed everything. When he entered, the prison doctor informed him that if he continued his current lifestyle, he would not survive long. Coss changed his ways, and after his release from prison, he put his talents to good use, achieving great accomplishments. Coss Marte: Who is he?
When Coss Marte’s mother was still six months pregnant, her parents moved from the Dominican Republic to the United States. Coss was a good student and got good grades growing up. But when he first tried marijuana at age 11, he realized he could easily make money selling drugs. So Coss started selling marijuana and cocaine exactly as he planned.
Coss excelled in both academics and athletics and eventually received a scholarship to boarding school in Rhode Island. He said: “I thought selling drugs was not a horrible thing. I started selling narcotics to students there. I assumed it was just a way of life. People work to do that. Coss was eventually found with ecstasy in his room and was later taken to a rehab facility. His roommate showed him how to turn cocaine into crack.
Coss’ family begged him to stop the drug trade, but he refused. After just one semester, Coss was expelled from SUNY-Albany in New York. He quickly started earning around $3,000 a day just from selling drugs. Then he took over when one of his cocaine sources retired, and things accelerated. In order to prevent the police from discovering his hiding place during a raid, Coss collaborated with other dealers and created a sophisticated drug trafficking structure.
Coss eventually had his men deliver drugs by bicycle and then by rental automobile. In order to minimize the suspicions of the police, he even made them put on costumes. Coss was earning nearly $2 million a year from his heroin deals by the age of 19. However, Coss received a 7-year sentence after being caught once with cocaine and crack inside his jacket. But it made no difference as he managed his empire behind bars until his release four years later.
Coss had a son with a casual partner when he was 22. Then, during an undercover investigation, federal investigators arrested Coss in March 2009. Before he was reduced to seven years, he was sentenced to 12 years. . He married his son’s mother around this time. Coss was obese when he started his prison term and the doctor warned him that if he did not change his lifestyle he would die in five years.
Coss then began training using whatever tools he had at hand. He did everything he could in his prison cell to get active and lose weight, other than eating canned tuna. Coss lost 70 pounds over the next six months thanks to her efforts. He was motivated to improve in part because of his son. In addition to helping himself, Coss shared his fitness routine with other prisoners to help them lose weight.

Today, where is Coss Marte?
Coss spent four years in prison before being released in 2013. He continued his diet thereafter and eventually launched CONBODY in 2014. In order to create a boot camp atmosphere reminiscent of a prison, Coss employs former offenders to give drill sessions. Coss has for some years become an inmate supporter through his foundation of the same name. Over 70,000 people served as his clients and he worked with many inmates.
In addition to CONBODY, Coss recently launched CONBUD, a marijuana dispensary business in New York City. He intended to give former inmates a second chance by hiring them as employees. Coss, who now resides in New York, spent the two years following his parole working as a resume writer. Second Chance Studios was also co-founded by Coss. It is a non-profit digital media organization that wants to educate and hire ex-offenders.
Coss said, “The scholarship program pairs participants with seasoned industry mentors and provides technical, life, vocational and soft skills to meet the needs of returning citizens to retrain for well-paying positions in areas such as podcasting and video production. We intend to use the Fellows to produce content for CONBUD so that people who have served time in prison can get jobs in various areas of the business. Coss and his wife Roxie recently welcomed a new child into the world.
