Don attended Baker High School, where he became interested in journalism while being one of the school’s top students. During his final year there, he was chosen to serve as class president. Motivated by his parents and determined to pursue a career in journalism, Don enrolled at Louisiana State University in 1984, then moved on to Brooklyn College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism in 1988. While in college, Don was also somewhat athletic, as he occasionally played football and soccer.
Journalist career
Don launched his career while still in college, working for the WNYW network as a press assistant – soon after he was asked to work for Fox News.
After graduating from high school, Don joined the WBRC network in Birmingham, Alabama and served as a news anchor before being asked to work for WCAU located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Don then moved to St. Louis, Missouri to work as an anchor for KTVI, then was invited to work for NBC News, serving as a correspondent for several of their shows, including “NBC Nightly News” and “Today” – he could also were seen anchored on the MSNBC show “Weekend Today”. The year 2003 saw him start working for the WMAQ-TV network as a co-news anchor and reporter, and during his time there Don won three Emmy Awards.
Don has hosted CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Special” since 2014; he was always honest about the quality of the television network’s news and questioned its work. In October 2017, Don had to call the police after receiving racial death threats, and in January 2018 he started one of his shows saying “It’s CNN tonight, I’m Don Lemon”. The President of the United States is a racist”.
This made him an enemy of Trump voters and white supremacists, but Don went on to say that immigrants are not as dangerous to the United States as white supremacists.
On January 31, 2018, Don decided to take a week off after his sister L’Tanya ‘Leisa’ Lemon Grimes was found drowned in a pond – she was 58 and accidentally fell into the pond and fell drowned while fishing. When he returned to work on February 6, Don thanked all of his supporters for their kind words.
Don is also a bit of a writer, having published his book “Transparent” in 2011.
