Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the one thing that’s reigned supreme in our collective minds since the teaser gave us a glimpse into the mechanics of the film. The trailer, which dropped just 2 days ago, reignited all of our aspirations for the narrative that needs to be complete for Marvel to move forward. Not only do audiences get a new Black Panther, but also characters that become singularly important in the future of the timeline.

What will it take to become the next Black Panther?
Letitia Wright’s female co-stars joined in a conversation with Elle about what the new Black Panther costume means for the person wearing it. Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o have played very pivotal roles in the world of Black Panther since Captain America: Civil War and continue to do so. The characters’ close association with their king and leader has consequently placed them in a position where they are knowledgeable enough about the politics of the war to take up the mantle left behind in T’Challa’s wake.

However, the Dora Milaje is the stronghold that Okoye serves and as such serves and protects royalty. Nakia, too, is skilled in the arts of battle and espionage, but never in a superhero vigilante capacity. But crucially, the two women (since the trailer clearly shows a woman wearing the Panther costume) don’t have the only aspect that was proclaimed a necessity by Bast, the Panther Goddess – that the Black Panther must be royalty. Wakandan and descendant of one of the five tribes of the nation. This places Shuri as the most qualified candidate, given her extensive knowledge of technology, weaponry, battlefield experience, and intelligence.

According to the comics, King T’Challa’s sister, following the latter’s serious injuries, had taken up the torch several times to continue the fight. But the MCU is anything but faithful to the literal course of events, which makes rare invocations from the comics, like Captain’s famous “Avengers, assemble.” call for the final battle of End of Game all the more memorable. So that could either mean Shuri taking the role in the final battle against Talocan, or there could be a musical chair of Black Panther contenders until everyone is finally beaten for the final seat.

Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o indicated that the latter was true. As Nyong’o states, “We like speculation”says Gurira, “They don’t understand everything! » The trailer clearly points to a different, better-equipped suit, ultimately sporting the same dots on the mask that we’ve already seen on Shuri’s face on several occasions. This could essentially place her as the final high and chosen successor. But the path to that watershed moment might not be paved with such finality in his declaration of Boseman’s legacy.
Whatever Ryan Coogler’s film has in store for us, the actors said at least one thing in common, that the film offered them a path out of darkness and taught them how to overcome the pain of grief and loss. In the words of Nyong’o, “[Coogler] offered a raft from a deep sea of sorrow” and that alone marks why millions would flock to watch the film and celebrate it despite the resounding absence of its most beloved frontman.
