Who is the monster Ted from Werewolf By Night?

The Halloween special Werewolf by Night has been released on Disney+. The story revolves around the Bloodstone family. Basically, the family was having a Bloodstone Mansion hunt. In this tradition, hunters from around the world would gather at night and battle a monster to claim the mighty bloodstone artifact. As we can see, the monster the hunters are fighting actually has a name. Jack Russel aka the Werewolf tells Elsa Bloodstone to call the monster by name and treat him like an old friend. What is his name? Ted. Literally the least monster name ever, unless we consider Ted Bundy. The reason his name is Ted is actually given in the Marvel comics.

Marvel comics fans will have heard of the Man-Thing. Man-Thing may look like a monster, but he eventually became a superhero. In fact, the Man-Thing origin story from the Marvel comics is where you’ll find the reason for his name Ted. Man-Thing was originally known as Theodore Sallis or Dr. Ted Sallis. He was a brilliant biochemist and even worked as a professor at Empire State University. After that, due to his skills as a biochemist, he was recruited by the military for a project known as Project Sulfur. The goal was to develop a serum that would provide immunity against toxic biochemicals. This concoction was named serum SO-2. However, this very serum eventually turned him into the Man-Thing. He injected himself with it and ended up crashing in a swamp. As a result, when he emerged, he became the monster we see today.

Another reason he was called Ted instead of Man-Thing was to humanize him. The special focused on the two monsters Man-Thing and Werewolf. So it’s understandable that they try to make them whole characters instead of just one-dimensional monsters. While all the other hunters as well as the Bloodstone family treated him like a monster, Jack Russel was his friend. Of course, he would call him Ted. After all, he still had his humanity and was Ted Sallis deep inside.

Man-Thing may have started out as a monster that didn’t show much restraint when it came to killing people. But over time, he became a superhero. In fact, he defended the Earth from Dormammu and the Dark Dimension. It was also an integral part part of Midnight Sons. Man-Thing has also teamed up with Fantastic Four’s Hulk and The Thing on several occasions. As we have already discussed his origin story, let’s talk about the uncanny power he demonstrated in Werewolf by Night.

Man-Thing has a very strong sense of empathy. His actions are very much based on the emotions he feels from those around him. That’s why if people show fear, they literally get burned by him. His body can secrete extremely potent sulfuric acid in response to emotions such as fear and violence. It burns its victim from within. And that’s exactly what we see in Werewolf by Night. All of his powers and even his transformation are connected to the Nexus of All Realities. His malleable form gives him the form of power himself, but he wants to pass through fences or even create weapons. Man-Thing also possesses the ability to regenerate his body from surrounding plant matter.

Both Jack Russel and Ted Sallis are humans who unwittingly turned into monsters. However, they don’t want to be defined by it and still see the humanity in each other. This makes their bond strong and special. Even in the Marvel comics, they’ve collaborated multiple times and worked together on the same team. Man-Thing worked alongside Werewolf, Morbius and Ghost Rider. Both were also part of the Midnight Sons. And given the bond and friendship they shared in Werewolf by Night, they’ll likely appear together in the MCU in the future as well.
