Early life and education

Tony grew up in Miami in a wealthy family, his father Anthony Edward Dokoupil is a businessman while his mother Ann is a lawyer. He grew up in a luxurious home and went to elementary school with President GHW Bush’s grandchildren.

When he turned five, Tony’s father left home and it was later revealed that he was a drug addict who spent most of his money on drugs, almost bankrupting the family.

Fascinated by the reporters and hosts he watched on TV, Tony decided he wanted to be a journalist, and after graduating from high school in which he was a reporter for the school show, he enrolled in George Washington University’s School of Business, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2003. He continued his education at Columbia University, earning a master’s degree in American Studies in 2004, while he obtained his doctorate in 2005.

Journalist career

Tony launched his career in 2004 when he started working for Way Back Info as a journalist and writer – he and his colleague were nominated for a National Magazine Award for Best Freestanding Department. He stayed at Way Back Info for two years before joining Newsweek & The Daily Best, where he worked as a senior editor covering stories such as The Suicide Epidemic and Dustoff 73, among others. He began working concurrently at Random House as a writer in 2009, and for the next four years. While at Random House he wrote the book “The Last Pirate: A Father, His Son and the Golden Age of Marijuana” which was published in 2014.

In 2013, he joined NBC News as senior editor, remaining with them for two years before joining MSNBC and becoming their national correspondent and reporter. Tony started working for CBS News in August 2016 as a correspondent and has been with their team for over three years now.

Tony met Katy Tur when the two started working together for NBC News in 2014 – they started out as friends and after four months started dating. On October 27, 2017, the two tied the knot at an event in Utah that only their closest friends and family attended.
