Who will Aemond Targaryen be? This is what the book says

We’ve all seen the cruelty with which Aemond Targaryen walks, especially after bonding with the dragon Vhagar, which happens to be the largest in the world (aka Westeros, in this universe), making Aemond one of the most feared people in Westeros. The book, Dance of the Dragons, mentioned it, and we finally see it happen in Episode 7.

The Episode 8 trailer may reveal some things about Aemond, now with the badass eye patch and a dangerous stare. Let’s explore who Aemond Targaryen really is.

Can Aemond Targaryen become king?

Aemond’s father, Viserys I Targaryen, will likely die in Episode 8, as he has been ill since the last timeline jump in Episode 6. After his death, who will take the throne? So far we have seen that Viserys does not like being king and fulfills his duty. However, he was good, just, and nonetheless a just king. He named Rhaenyra as his heir, who is female and cannot be taken seriously as an heir. His eldest son Aegon Targaryen does not have a dragon.

Aemond, on the other hand, has the will to be king, has shown competitiveness, and possesses the largest dragon in the world! Could he be starting to develop ambition for the throne?

Maybe we’ll see Aemond versus Daemon

In the book, spoiler alert, Aemond Targaryen dies at the hands of his uncle Daemon Targaryen, following an epic battle in the sky on dragonback. This aerial battle will be a spectacle as the greatest dragon Vhagar and an experienced rider, Daemon, face off face to face.

Even in the Episode 8 trailer, we see Aemond with the eyepatch bending a sword and ordering someone to kill or capture someone. We know Daemon is a possible competitor that Aemond must have a fight going with; however, it is more likely that Aemond will fight Ser Criston Cole. It is traditional for George RR Martin to have a fit man like Ser Criston fight against a misfit like Aemond. It’s like when Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark fought in the first season of Game of Thrones.

We know Aemond’s fate is near, if not in this season then maybe in the next. All we can do is wait and watch.
