What makes Iron Man, Iron Man? is this his costume? Yes of course. Is that his arc reactor? This too. Or is it the charismatic enigma of Robert Downey Jr playing billionaire playboy philanthropist and genius Tony Stark? Well, all of these factors combine to make Marvel Studios’ Iron Man one of the most beloved and revered superheroes to date. But even Tony Stark is sometimes lost in his head, incredible genius as he is, he is also subject to the mortal flaw of being human. Luckily, Stark has an invisible friend who helps him, guides him, and is there whenever he needs a shoulder for support.
That’s right, he’s not Iron Man without his butler/friend/companion Jarvis.
Actor Paul Bettany has been an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the first Iron Man. Starting out as the disembodied AI Jarvis, he would later transition to the superhero Vision. But when the actor was first cast in the MCU, he compared his casting to a heist.
“Almost felt like theft,” says Paul Bettany
Paul Bettany Had a Brief, Sharp First Appearance in Marvel Studio’s First-Ever Movie Iron Man in 2008, where he was not visible as Robert Downey Jr’s well-mannered and humble AI assistant, Jarvis. He recalled an incident while speaking with GQ about when the director of the Iron Man Trilogy and Happy Hogan face John Favreau called him and asked him to play Jarvis.

Bettany also admitted he couldn’t help but feel a little guilty voicing Jarvis In Iron Man due to the minimal work required and the huge salary that awaited after the seemingly easy two-hour work schedule.
“I feel like a pirate. It’s robbery. I come in, say a few lines on a piece of paper for two hours, then they give me a bag of money and I leave and go about my day,” said Bettany “I feel a bit guilty because at least playing can be exhausting, with long hours… but I’m not doing anything! And I’ve never seen one. Bettany said in an interview with Digital Spy.
