31 Days of Horror: 5 of the Most Disappointing Horror Sequels

With so many horror movies coming out every year, it’s no surprise that some sadly miss the mark. When movies become franchises and fans get excited for the next installment, those movies that don’t live up to expectations can be all the more disappointing. Here are five of the most underwhelming horror sequels you better miss.

The conjuration: the devil made me do it

Disappointing horror sequel

“Arne Cheyenne Johnson stabs and murders its owner, claiming to be under demonic possession. Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate the case and try to prove his innocence.

Part of the most successful horror franchise of all time, the third film starring the Warrens was highly anticipated, following the spinoff the nun and annabelle, he had a lot to do. The first movie was a masterstroke in tense, horrifying, possession-based horror, but sadly the third movie didn’t read the memo, and while it’s a decent attempt to capture the magic of the first two, it was considerably short.

Also with the Warrens, the film follows them trying to prove a young man’s innocence, as they arrive in a small town after a man murders its landlord while possessed. Trying to change the formula of the first two seemed like the downfall of the third film, as they tried to prove possession to the law as much as rid the victim of the deadly spirit.

It: Chapter 2

Disappointing horror sequel

“After 27 years, the Losers Club receives a call from their friend Mike Hanlon informing them that Pennywise has returned. They decide to honor their promise and return to their old town to put an end to the evil clown for good.

One of many horror films based on a Stephen King novel, this film marks the third film in the This franchise. The original was straight to TV and became a cult classic with a huge following. So when the first of the remakes was announced, he was both excited and worried. All the worry was forgotten pretty quickly once fans saw It: Chapter One, for not only was it relatively faithful in every way to the novel, but it imprinted its own authority on the story.

Unfortunately, this did not follow in the sequel, It: Chapter 2, much less scary, interesting and overall good compared to the TV original or the first chapter. By focusing more on the Losers Club as adults, with occasional flashbacks to them as children, it’s a lot less scary to watch adults pick up on Pennywise’s admittedly absurd backstory. Not as big of a delinquent as the other disappointing horror sequels on this list, but still disappointing nonetheless.

Alien 3

Disappointing horror sequel

“Ellen Ripley’s escape pod crashes into Fiorina 161, a penal colony planet terrorized by an alien. She rallies the inmates to kill him but realizes she is carrying an alien embryo herself .

the original Extraterrestrial is considered one of the best sci-fi horrors of all time, and in some ways remains the benchmark when comparing modern horrors of the same ilk. The second then upped the ante from a single xenomorph stalking Ripley and her crew, to an entire group of them attacking and killing a unit of marines as well as pursuing the sci-fi heroine.

Then there’s the third…a film mired in controversy with directors moving in and out, story changes late in production, and a lead actress who was hesitant to return. All of this and more ends up bringing us the franchise’s worst movie yet, arguably even more. Alien: Resurrection.

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

Disappointing horror sequel

“A group of college friends embark on the ‘Blair Witch Hunt’ tour and land at Rustin Parr’s house. When they wake up the next morning, they can’t remember any details of the night before.

Everything the original built and innovated was thrown right out the window with this underwhelming horror sequel. The original was tense, scary, quirky and innovative, the sequel rehashed a similar story and tried to capture the magic of the original, but as is the case with these cash grab sequels, not only has narrowly missed the target, but by a huge margin. Watch the first one and stop.

Jaws: Revenge

Disappointing horror sequel

“The island community of Amity is terrorized by shark attacks when a vengeful shark returns to avenge the death of its offspring.”

When the main star of a movie not only publicly announces his disgust but calls the movie terrible, you know you’re not watching a particularly good movie. This is exactly what happened with Michael Caine, who sadly said about Jaws: Revenge I’ve never seen it, but in every way it’s terrible. However, I have seen the house he built, and it is wonderful.“.

Normally there would be a group of fans somewhere on some sort of social network denouncing the comment and defending the movie, but that didn’t happen with this one, and for good reason. With nothing but the town, a shark, and a few secondary characters present, there’s nothing and no one from the original trilogy, and it’s no stretch to call it nothing more than a seizure of shameless money by the studio attempting to build on previous entries in the franchise. Not just a disappointing horror sequel, but a terrible movie in its own right.
