When we think of Black Widow, the first thing that comes to mind is Scarlett Johansson sporting her signature red hair and holding her twin batons. However, it would have been very different if the MCU’s first choice for the role, Emily Blunt, had agreed to play the role of Natasha Romanoff.
The 2010 movie, iron man 2 is the movie that features Black Widow in the MCU. This role was originally to be played by A silent place actress, but due to scheduling conflicts, she had to turn down the role. Leading to Johansson to take over and make it his own.

Emily Blunt opens up about Black Widow’s rejection
In a 2021 interview with Howard Stern, Emily Blunt explained why she refused to play the assassin in the first place. According to her contract with 20th Century Fox, now known as 20th Century Studios, she was required to sign an optional image contract, which bound her to work in Gulliver’s Travels.
“I was hired to do Gulliver’s Travels. I didn’t want to do Gulliver’s Travels.
The actress went on to explain how even though she liked the role, she couldn’t accept the role. Blunt speaks adoringly of the time she spent working with so many very nice people to work with, but the actress still feels conflicted over the choice.
She said, however, that for her it was not about the project, but about the role. She said she’s always on the lookout for the perfect role as a superhero, as long as it speaks to her and fits her criteria.

Emily Blunt’s Future in the MCU and the Four Fantastic Casting Rumors
By 2021 and early 2022, following the announcement that The Fantastic Four is in the works for MCU Phase 4, casting rumors had started circulating on social media and various other platforms as to who would play the superheroes. At the time, it was rumored that Emily Blunt was in talks to play Invisible Woman, aka Susan Storm.
That wasn’t the case, however, when the actress stepped forward to respond to those whispers. She had claimed that while superhero roles are not below her, they are still not roles she would see herself playing as such. She explained that the cast was just fans who wanted to find a dream cast and that wasn’t true, even though her husband, John Krasinksi, did actually show up as Mister Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
