West of Westeros: Rings of Power could copy Game of Thrones, to explore the world beyond Tolkien’s Middle-earth in future seasons

For decades, JRR Tolkien’s high fantasy books have captivated readers around the world. The author’s fascinating universe has been brought to life and colored by film and television adaptations of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. These had a huge success.

The Lord of the Rings universe expands

Showrunner Patrick McKay explained in The Official The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Podcast that there is much more to the show’s potential universe than what was explored in Season 1. He stated that,

“One of the first conversations we had with Amazon about this was the feeling that Tolkien’s world was much larger than the limited geography traversed in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books, and that there is large islands to the west in Númenor at this time. There is Valinor still further west and then to the east there is a whole Rhûn continent which has never been visited and never explored. what we do know is that the stars there are strange.

The rings of power the writers seem to have plenty of time to explore Tolkien’s world, as they’ve announced they’re already planning five seasons. Season 2 has already started filming just outside of London, England, so those plans are already underway. Lindsey Weber, executive producer of the show, also has high hopes for future seasons, stating that season 2 would be “grittier, more intense and maybe a little scarier.”

The showrunners also intend to include more iconic settings, Middle-earth characters, and a two-episode battle. Considering all of this, the show has set itself a high standard and may need all the help it can get to not only retain the current readership, but also attract a wider audience.
