Although the character of Bernard Dowd has existed for almost 2 decades in the DC comics narrative, it took until the contribution of Meghan Fitzmartin in 2021 for the story between him and Tim Drake to finally come to fruition. The premiere of HBO Max on Titans Season 4 brought a new addition to the roster with James Scully’s Bernard taking on the role of Tim Drake’s friend and lover. However, the character’s live-action debut comes with a minor edit from the show’s creators. Bernard, whose last name was Dowd in the comics, now becomes Bernard Fitzmartin as a mark of respect to comic book writer Meghan Fitzmartin whose extensive efforts with Tim Drake: Sum of Our Parts The storyline helped establish Drake’s sexuality and eventually reconciled the longtime friends as love interests.

Originally created by Bill Willingham and Rick Mays, the Bernard Dowd character debuted in the 2003 issue of Robin #121. At the time, the DC Comics Universe was focused on the New Earth continuity narrative that began with Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1986 and ended with Flashpoint in 2011. The post timeline -2011, which then dipped into a post-Flashpoint continuity arc helped collide the worlds of Tim Draka aka Robin, and Bernard Dowd in Batman: Urban Legends #4 written by Meghan Fitzmartin and illustrated by Belen Ortega.

Shortly after, Season 4 of the series which premiered in November ushered in a new era in the world of comic adaptations when Bernard Fitzmartin entered the frame.
