‘Valkyrie Wasn’t Happy Being King of Asgard’: MCU Could Set Daniel Craig’s Rumored Balder the Brave Series for Thor’s Half-Brother to Become King of New Asgard

-

the pinnerJeff Sneider himself sits down to discuss wonderful topics (pun intended) as he talks about Daniel Craig, those amazingly blue eyes, and his hopeful future at Marvel. Following the Bond actor’s retirement, much was said about what he intended to take up next in his career trajectory and one of the reports that seemed to hold water was a role as one of the most beloved characters in Marvel comics and Thor. half-brother – Balder the Brave.

While rarely has progress been made on this front between the studio and the actor, talk of Daniel Craig joining the MCU is something that is unlikely to die quietly.

Daniel Craig’s Potential MCU Role As Balder the Brave

After months of talk of Balder’s potential cameo, rumors have escalated to include Daniel Craig’s Marvel debut in a series rather than a sad multiversal Illuminati massacre. That being said, the potential arcs that may allow the actor to appear are multiple in magnitude. According to John Rocha, if the MCU intends to stay close to its source, then Balder could very well become the next King of New Asgard. Given Valkyrie’s distaste for the throne and the mundane task of governing, the shift in power could also occur without the threat of war, bloodshed, and usurpation.

While discussing Daniel Craig’s position as Balder in the MCU, Sneider repeats:

“[Daniel Craig] is done with Bond, he’s in another Knives Out movie but it’s gonna be a long way off because Rian Johnson has yet to write that thing. So he has some time ahead of him… I’ll be very curious to see what Daniel Craig does next and if he goes straight back to something big like a “Balder the Brave” series… But I think “Balder the Brave” is something different, it’s a new character whereas all of these Marvel shows are all people you’ve seen.

If a Balder series is indeed being considered by Marvel, Daniel Craig’s role will extend far beyond a cameo role. He will become a mainstay, considering how universally beloved the Prince of Asgard is in the comics. On the other hand, given that MCU has already dealt Ragnarokan event to which Balder is intertwined, it sets the precedent for the Asgardian god to come after Thor for destroying their world, deem him unworthy in the process, and take the throne of New Asgard.

Marvel also allows Hercules to star in the story, knowing the Greek god was bent on revenge at the end of Thor: Love and Thunder. If Hercules unleashes his wrath on Asgard and Balder rises to defend his people, it could provide him with the redemption arc for his absence from the mainstream MCU narrative and bring him closer to his brother, Thor.

The Ebb and Flow of Balder the Brave’s Arc in the MCU

In Marvel comics, Balder the Brave is often found alongside Thor, fighting alongside him on the battlefields of the Nine Realms and serving the Asgardians with unwavering devotion. Like its mythological arc, Marvel’s Balder is a key element that triggers Ragnarök, the cyclical event of Asgard’s end and rebirth. However, the cinematic universe not only excludes him from his potential storyline, but gives him no place within the MCU.

Hopefully all of that was about to be changed when Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness was rumored to debut the Norse god as the seventh member of the Illuminati. After this also turned out to be a bust, the film’s concept artist Darrell Warner finally revealed a watercolor that clearly depicted Daniel Craig’s Balder in Asgardian garb. The costumer of Doctor Strange 2Graham Churchyard had also revealed to the Phase zero podcast in early July how Balder’s character really got along in the design –

“I took it to a prototype stage, we were sort of in this design thing, gathering fabrics and ideas and waiting for an actor. Poor Balder the Brave, he almost made Thor 1, Thor 2 and Thor 3.”

Marvel was set to finally cast Daniel Craig as Balder after months of buzzing rumors. But given the dropped cameo and Churchyard’s resounding opinion that the character won’t be making an appearance anytime soon, it seems like MCU intends to simmer Balder in its perpetual limbo.
