Modern Warfare 2 Special Ops Review: Two Guns Are Better Than One

modern warfare 2 sees the return of a fan-favorite mode in Spec Ops, the mission-based co-op mode that sees you and a friend tackle a variety of objectives and hopefully get away with it. come out alive.

Fans will remember the mode of the modern warfare 2 (2007), and more recently since the reboot in 2019. In the original all those years ago, you team up with a friend to take on a series of shorter missions with the goal of earning three stars. You choose your difficulty level and try to succeed in the different scenarios. In the most recent edition, you could team up with up to three other players and take on various missions on a much larger scale, again trying to ensure mission completion.

modern warfare 2 seems to mix these two approaches, in that the cards are huge, but you can only pair up with one of your friends. Right now, there are only three missions, which makes sense with the large scale of those on offer, at least in terms of the map.

The first of three Low Profile missions pits you and a friend against you to locate three separate radioactive objects, under the guise of removing nuclear materials from enemy hands. Starting from an airplane, you’ll parachute down and tackle the mission in any order you choose, before escaping, preferably unseen.

The second Denied Area mission is much less stealthy and much more run and gun, with the two of you tasked with destroying four separate SAM missile sites, to protect your allies in the skies.

The Last of Three Defender: Mt. Zaya is on a smaller scale, with you and your partner defending a site from oncoming enemy forces, who, if not killed quickly enough, will then plant a bomb in an attempt to destroy said site.

Although the missions differ in their objective and gameplay, they all share one thing in common; the maps are sparse, empty, and feel like lost ground, especially the denied area. The variety of missions is to be welcomed, each feeling considerably different from the last, but the emptiness of the maps and the enemy AI suffering from any real individuality makes the missions feel a bit lifeless at times.

As with the rest of the game, the gunplay is fantastic, as is the general performance, with little to no issues with lag, graphical dropouts, etc., and the nervous scramble for ammo after a swap of Shooting is always a fun part of every mission, but there’s no escaping the feeling that something is missing.

As already mentioned, there are currently only three Spec Ops missions, and hopefully that will increase as we get further from release, but personally I would have taken a larger and more varied selection of more missions. smaller and tighter than the three sprawling missions we received. Give me a Spec Ops Mile High Club Infinity Ward mission!

In all, Modern Warfare 2 The Spec Ops missions are great fun overall, if a little frustrating at times, although that would be remedied by a skilled teammate and a sense of real teamwork, which I definitely didn’t have with my friend . The missions don’t offer the huge replayability that the original Modern Warfare 2 offered all those years ago, however, even with the larger maps this time around.
