James Cameron defends Avatar 2’s obnoxiously long runtime: ‘Because there are more characters, more story to serve up’

After Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Avatar: The Way of the Water will be the most thrilling movie yet to be released in 2022. And it promises to be an immersive experience with its longer-than-usual runtime. Avatar 2009 lasted 2 hours 42 minutes (extended edition – 2 hours 58 meters) and it was considered quite long. But now James Cameron has broken down all barriers with Avatar 2. And he revealed the reason for The way of the waterThat’s a crazy long lifespan.

Why Avatar: The Water Path Is So Long

Will fans have to say goodbye to Avatar?

Compared to the previous film, this one is 12 minutes longer as it is 3 hours and 10 minutes long. Which surpasses it even beyond Avengers: Endgameis 3 hours and 2 minutes long. And having such a long lifespan comes as no surprise as James Cameron needs to lay some important groundwork for the 3 upcoming sequels.

Why Avatar 2 is longer

In an interview with GamesRadar, Cameron explained that the long term is therefore that he would have plenty of time to explore all of his characters. He said:

The goal is to tell an extremely captivating story on an emotional basis. I would say the focus in the new movie is more on character, more on story, more on relationships, more on emotion. We didn’t spend as much time on relationships and emotions in the first movie as we did in the second movie, and it’s a longer movie because there are more characters to serve. There is more history to serve.

Well, I totally agree with Cameron.

Why a longer runtime was needed

Movie studios usually prefer to keep their movies short so they can have more showings per cinema screen in a day. And that should ultimately make them more money. But we’ve had plenty of examples proving that’s usually not the case. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love and Thunder, Jostice League, and several other movies went to theaters with this strategy leaving tons of footage on the cutting room floor. And needless to say, they all underperformed due to a lack of wiggle room and proper character exploration.

It is not necessary that a longer execution time always provides a successful output and Eternals is the proof. But we had several feature films that did incredibly well and went on to make billions. Civil war, Infinity War, End of Game, No coming homethe first one Avatar, and Titanic are perfect examples. Same BvS (EU) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League became better films with their longer running times. And now, wakanda forever will also join these films.

When people go to the cinema to watch these big-budget blockbusters, they’re looking for unforgettable and lasting spectacles. And Avatar: The Way of the Water looks forward to delivering big time on that front! So yes, it was important for the film to have this gigantic length.
