Two major Spidey characters stuck between SONY and MARVEL

According to a recent report, two prominent Spider-Man characters are still embroiled in the Disney and Sony copyright issue. Spider-Man, who is based on the Marvel Comics character, has been portrayed in film by a variety of actors, including Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. While Spider-Man may have his origins in the Marvel comics, Sony currently owns the movie rights to the superhero. As a result, Sony created the Spider-Man universe, which includes movies like Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven the hunter. While Spider-Man will be included in the MCU through a deal between Marvel Studios and Sony, the future of other Marvel superheroes is less certain.

For Spider-Man to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the companies first chose to collaborate in February 2015. As they enter Phase 5, they continue to do so. It’s just unheard of for major studios to share copyrights, but these two studios not only accomplished it, but did it well.

Even though the partnership nearly fell apart after Spider-Man: Far From Home, a new deal was struck in late 2019 that culminated in the generational event known as “No Way Home.” In addition to what appear to be vague terms involving Sony’s own Spider-Man universe, it also allowed Tom Holland to participate in an unnamed MCU project.

Center pivot and Spider-Woman are still caught up in the Disney v. Sony legal dispute over character rights. Although Hawkeye was the first MCU appearance of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin. Jessica Drew as Spider-Woman has yet to make a live appearance. Kingpin’s future should be important in the MCU TV continuity, but Spider-Woman’s position is a little less certain.

Although Kingpin is primarily known as an enemy of Spider-Man, his three-season run on Netflix’s Daredevil has almost entirely surpassed this association in recent years. He most recently appeared in Disney Plus’ Hawkeye, and his next appearance will be in Echo.
Fisk was most recently the main antagonist in Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated film. However, it is crucial to note that animation and live action rights are extremely distinct from each other.

A live-action Spider-Woman movie isn’t officially in the works, but Olivia Wilde has been tied to such an endeavor for a long time. The superhero will be voiced by Issa Rae in the upcoming animated film Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse. However, Kingpin’s live-action MCU future appears to be largely unscathed at the moment. It remains to be seen how ongoing rights disputes will continue to affect these two classic Spider-Man characters.
