How did Shuri’s mortal wound heal?

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever creates a huge tsunami at the box office. It has already raked in over $300 million worldwide and is set to rake in more. Conversation on social media was also dominated by praise for the Letitia Wright-directed film. But people also have questions about certain scenes. One of the most popular is: how did Shuri survive by impaling himself on the spear in the final fight with Namor? Well, we have the answer.

The Shuri and Namor fight

During the final fight between Wakanda and Talokan, we see Shuri and Namor face off head to head. And in the heat of battle we see Namor impale Shuri on his spear. The new Black Panther then pushes herself out of the weapon and without any difficulty she continues to fight.

This raised quite a few eyebrows and made some wonder how did Shuri recover so quickly? Well, we have two theories. Let’s come to them.

Theory One: The Suit Covered the Wound

One theory concerns his costume. Eagle-eyed viewers will have noticed that immediately after she broke free, her costume healed itself. As such, it’s possible the suit stanched the wound and stabilized her vitals so she could keep fighting.

But that raises another question. She looked absolutely fine during and after the fight. It didn’t look like she was in prolonged pain. So, did the suit finally heal his wounds? Probably not.

We’ve already seen during T’Challa and Killmonger’s fight in the first Black Panther movie that the suit can’t heal injuries to the wearer’s body and certainly not the kind of serious injuries Shuri had. The spear must have hit vital organs when it entered his stomach and came out the other side.

So what really happened to Shuri’s bodily injuries?

Theory Two – Weed Cures Everything

Namor in Black Panther - Wakanda Forever

This is where our second theory comes in. We think the herb Shuri got from Talokan helped her heal faster. When Shuri was visiting Talokan with Namor, he gave her his mother’s bracelet which contained a small portion of the herb that gave Talokans their unique powers and characteristics.

Shuri then took the herb and synthesized it. This allowed him to access the Ancestral Plane and obtain the powers of the Black Panther. The grass was similar to the flower the Wakandans had and it was destroyed by Killmonger in the first Black Panther movie.

But it doesn’t seem to be exactly the same. It is possible that it provides accelerated healing along with other enhanced senses. And it could have quickly healed Shuri, just like it stopped Namor from dying in the explosion she triggered during the fight. Also, immediately in the scene after, we don’t see him with injuries.

The Third Theory – The Stark Factor in the MCU

Healing and regeneration technology has come a long way in the MCU. In Avengers: Endgame, we saw Tony Stark use a cooling and healing agent on the Pontoon after trying on the Infinity Gauntlet to bring everyone back.

So it’s entirely possible that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which takes place after Endgame, has the same type of advanced healing technology that can trigger rapid regeneration. We even saw a lot of high tech in the movie itself, ranging from communication beads to advanced flight systems, and more.

All in all, it was probably a combination of all three theories that allowed Shuri to heal quickly and continue the fight with Namor.
