Even though Emma D’Arcy has long silver hair as Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, Emma D’Arcy has a short haircut that she sometimes dyes different shades in real life. Her distinctive hairstyle, on the other hand, was not always present. Now that Emma D’Arcy is back in the public eye after winning hearts with her portrayal of Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, people are digging up earlier photos of her when she was more feminine and much younger. .
Emma D’Arcy said in an interview that she was “allergic” to long hair. She didn’t seem to be allergic in 2018 though. She went through a “transformation for House of the Dragon” as Vogue Magazine said in an article and it was during the casting of House of the Dragon that Emma D’Arcy came out of the closet while writing “non-binary” against the gender section in a form. Although she mentions her pronouns as they/them, she gained a lot of traction after starring as Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon.
Anyway, let’s take a look at how Emma D’Arcy looked back in 2018.
Emma D’Arcy had longer hair in 2018
According to some reports, photos of Emma D’Arcy that appeared on Reddit and other online platforms are from a piece called “A Girl In School Uniform (Walks Into A Bar)”. The Startefacts report suggests that these photos are from the year 2018, however, the location is not mentioned. She looks completely different in these photos.
The previous photos immediately sparked a discussion; whether the House of the Dragon actor should keep his hair long or if Emma’s current hairstyle is better. Nonetheless, everyone seemed to agree on one thing: she was gorgeous then and now, and she was a great option to play Rhaenyra Targaryen.
Emma D’Arcy faces a problem because of her short hair
Rhaenyra Targaryen obviously has long silver hair, and since Emma D’Arcy had her signature short hair during her casting process for House of the Dragon, she had trouble auditioning with a long-haired wig. This was mainly due to the Covid-19 lockdown that she couldn’t find a usable wig. Miguel Sapochnik, renowned director of numerous Game of Thrones and three House of the Dragon episodes so far, including the series premiere, wanted to see Emma D’Arcy in a long-haired wig before he and the others showrunners cannot launch it. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, here’s what Emma had to say about the debacle:
“For 24 hours my partner and I just tried…We hot glued these hair extensions onto these wig clips. We were sending photos to Miguel… And he said, ‘Can you keep trying?’ We kept trying until we found something that gave me the illusion that I had long hair. And then every time we recorded after that, I would sit in front of the TV and my partner would do my hair extensions for an hour and a half before we recorded anything.
Well, her efforts have paid off as she now plays House of the Dragon’s most beloved character.
