It’s been known for some time that Sony wants to enter the TV and streaming space with many of its Spider-verse characters. But all talk of its shows was with Amazon for Prime Video releases, instead of having another partnership with Disney for Disney+. And now things are official as Prime Video will be the exclusive home of Sony’s Marvel shows. In fact, the first of these series has already been announced with Silk: Spider Companybut fans aren’t completely convinced.
The Sony-Amazon deal
With MGM under its belt, Amazon was already well on its way. But now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, they’ve formed a new bond with Sony and are currently working on a slate of several original TV series based on the Spider-verse characters. According to the TV line, Silk: Spider Society will be the first of “Sequel to live-action television series based on the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters, which includes over 900 characters”, (by MGM+).

Silk: Spider Society – The Series
Angela Kang (The Walking Dead showrunner) will oversee the Silk series and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will serve as executive producers. The show centers on Cindy Moon, a Korean-American girl who also gets bitten by the same radioactive spider that turned Peter Parker into Spider-Man. So, in the same way, we will follow Cindy Moon’s journey as she “escapes imprisonment and searches for his missing family on the verge of becoming the superhero known as Silk.”
We might expect this series to feature other Spider-Verse characters for Sony-Amazon to spin off. And another important thing to note is that before streaming globally on Amazon’s Prime Video platform, Silk: Spider Society will first air nationally on the Epix-transformed network MGM+.

Fan reactions to the “Silk” announcement
Sony has a bad history of mismanaging its primary IP address. The First 2 Spider-Man Movies Were Good, But Then Spiderman 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man movies seemed problematic (to put it mildly). Then Marvel started dealing with Spider-Man and he became a gold mine. Meanwhile, Sony has started cashing in on its other Spider-verse characters. They did well with Venombut Morbius was awful. So, not every fan is totally sold on the new announcement(s) because they don’t want another Morbius to watch!

They could move away from Peter Parker and give Cindy her own space in the Spider-verse. This means she could be the “Spider-Man” of his universe. But all we can hope for is that they handle the character in a way that’s true to the comics.
