The return of the mummy starring Brendan Fraser was an opinionated film, to say the least. In the modern age of big-budget CGIs, the 2001 film was surely lacking in technology. Poor graphics and janky video game character styling were disappointing to many, but not Brendan Fraser.

Brendan Fraser feels the CGI somehow fits into the narrative

If you think the image above is from some mortal combat game from the early 2000s, you’re not alone. The image is of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson portraying the character of Scorpion King in the film. The poor CGI was a letdown factor for many and lowered the tone of the movie.

In his interviews with QG, Brendan Fraser was very candid about the CGI used in The return of the mummy. Although the actor admitted to the terror of it, he claimed that it somehow fit into the narrative of the story. The show fell apart during the premiere of The return of the mummy where Brendan Fraser met the film’s CGI team.

“I only met Dwayne after the premiere because he was a piece of duct tape on a stick that we referred to. Of course, they put it in CGI later. I know I know. Be kind! The guys who did the Scorpion King CGI, [I saw them] at the premiere and they were like, ‘Hey, how are you? We did the Scorpion King CGI. Yes, we needed a little more time. It was at the very last minute.

Although the last-minute reason was repeatedly listed as bad CGI, it was of lower quality even in the 2000s. Brendan Fraser also explained how the solution could be fixed or for him… let it be.

“Part of the charm of this one now is…it could be remastered, I guess, but it wouldn’t be as fun if you didn’t see that janky video game character of Dwayne. It’s kind of just perfect how it works.

The return of the mummy scored 6.4/10 on IMDB and a minimum of 47% on Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of people loved the script and the action, but the CGI was what bothered them the most. After starring in the 2001 film, Fraser starred in the franchise’s third installment. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor which failed miserably.
