Quentin Tarantino Goes To War Against The MCU, Says Hollywood ‘Wonderment’ Is Killing True Cinema

After several filmmakers, Quentin Tarantino wondered if Marvel movies should be considered real cinema. The Cinematic Universe under Marvel Studios consists of 30 films. All the movies under the MCU performed very well at the box office and most of them also garnered positive reviews. Some of these films have even made it into the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time, with Avengers: Endgame being in second place. However, many legendary filmmakers still criticized these films and the studio.

Quentin Tarantino is the newest addition to the long list of directors who have criticized Marvel movies. Earlier this month, the director shared his thoughts on superhero movies and why he would never work on a Marvel movie. In his recent interview with Variety, the American filmmaker clarified that he hates Marvel movies, but isn’t as excited about them anymore.

Quentin Tarantino would never work on a Marvel movie

Earlier this month, director Quentin Tarantino shared his thoughts on Marvel movies on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast. The director said he would never work on Marvel movies.

While promoting his new book Cinema speculations Tarantino shared with the Los Angeles Times that directors under Marvel Studios are just hired hands, and he doesn’t prefer having such a role while working on a movie.

You must be an employee to do these things. I am not a mercenary. I’m not looking for a job.” said Tarantino. The pulp Fiction The director also said that he did not want to be part of these films because they were not his kind of films.

Why Quentin Tarantino Doesn’t Like Marvel Movies?

Quentin Tarantino’s statement that the directors have just been hired for the Marvel studio did not sit well with fans. Speaking to Variety, the director clarified that he doesn’t hate Marvel movies. “Listen, I used to collect Marvel comics like crazy when I was a kid,” Tarantino shared. He further stated that he would “be totally happy and love them totally,” if he would have been in his twenties. “But, you know, I’m almost 60, so yeah. No, I’m not as excited about them,” he added.

He also mentioned that the one thing he doesn’t like is that everyone is focused on making and watching only those types of movies. Tarantino said these movies have taken over the current era of cinema and there really isn’t room for anything else.

The Proof of death star also mentioned that actors working in the MCU cannot be considered movie stars. “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who rose to fame playing these characters,” said Tarantino.

The American filmmaker claimed that it is these franchise characters who become a star, not actors. He said it’s one of the legacies of the Marvelization of Hollywood. Tarantino claimed that people knew these characters and came to watch them, not the actors portraying them.

Quentin Tarantino shared his opinion and he is neither the first nor the last filmmaker to criticize the practice of Marvel Studios. Some of Hollywood’s iconic filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese, Jodie Foster and Ridley Scott, have criticized Marvel films.

However, Marvel Studios doesn’t seem to be affected by any of this. He has already announced his plans until 2026 and is already preparing for the release of his next film.

The next movie under the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to release on February 17, 2023.
