When he appeared on the 2 bears, 1 cave podcast, Quentin Tarantino expressed his views on the current state of Hollywood, most directed at Marvel. Tarantino said Marvel actors aren’t real movie stars. He said that while Chris Evans played Captain America and Chris Hemsworth played Thor, it was actually their superhero characters that were the real stars.

“Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who rose to fame playing these characters. But they are not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a million times… but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.

What he means by his statement is that actors like Clint Eastwood and Tom Cruise have turned into movie stars by playing and being known for a multitude of characters. People go to watch their movies at the cinema, eager to see how the actors managed to land another role. Eastwood and Cruise are also considered some of the last “real” stars. However, when it comes to Marvel, people are much more excited about the character than the actor, which might be true to some extent!

Additionally, Tarantino has made it clear that he is in no way disparaging Marvel Studios. Instead, he said that was exactly what he believed was happening in the industry. The true romance director said that his “ax to grind” stems from the fact that it seems superhero movies and shows have taken over media platforms, leaving very little to no room for other things.

“My only ax to grind against them is that they are the only things that seem to have been made. And those are the only things that seem to generate any kind of excitement among a fanbase or even the studio that makes them. That’s what excites them. And so it’s just the fact that they’re the entire representation of that era of cinema right now. There really isn’t room for anything else. That’s my problem.”

In a previous interview with Deadline, Tarantino also mentioned how in the first two months of Avengers: Endgame’s release, people could only talk about the superhero-laden movie. His words carry weight because the excitement among MCU fans is rarely seen in any other fandom. Superhero movies are exactly what it seems these days!

Besides Tarantino, Martin Scorsese also criticized Marvel stating that they are not movies, they are “amusement park.” Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has taken a stand and said the Taxi driver the director’s remarks were false and “unfortunate.”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor, Simu Liu completely ignored these views and showed solidarity with Marvel. He said if Tarantino and Scorsese were solely responsible for movie stardom, he wouldn’t have been part of the $400 million-plus movie.

“If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom were Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to direct a $400 million+ movie. I am in awe of their cinematic genius. They are authors but they can’t point their noses at me or anyone.

Liu continued that while he knows no studio is perfect, he will continue to work and be proud of Marvel for making diversity a reality on the big screens, adding that while he loves the golden age, it was “white as hell. Marvel Studios certainly have the support of their cast!
