Johnson’s interview with Deadline reveals that the director struggled to come up with a name for the film. He admitted to writing the screenplay without any specific title in mind. It was terrifying, as he mentioned, because the original film took him 10 years to make.

I had come to a point where I had the idea of a central metaphor that Blanc could cling to and beat like a dead horse. Something that was glass. Something that was layered, but had the center in plain view, and so on. And I thought, OK, well, the billionaire is going to have an island, and maybe there’s a glass structure on it, so… is it a glass castle? Is it a glass palace? I literally opened the music app on my phone and just searched for the word “glass”, and “Glass Onion” appeared.”

It was an epiphany for him, and he knew right away that he was going to incorporate it into the film. What caught him off guard was that no one knew about Glass Onion reference, or that it was a Beatles song.

But I was always surprised when I showed the script how many people didn’t know it was a Beatles song. I thought everyone knew ‘Glass Onion’, but I guess that’s not the case.”

For those who don’t know the song, Glass Onion was written by John Lennon as part of their 1968 self-titled double album, also called the white album. The composer’s intention in choosing such a title was to confuse listeners. He knew that people would spend their time analyzing and unpacking the lyrics, so he had fun writing them.

Glass Onion the film, hit theaters Wednesday for a limited time, and it will debut on Netflix on December 23.
