The Japanese manga first premiered in Young Gangan magazine of Square Enix. The protagonist of the story is a first-year high school student Wakana Gojo who is an orphan raised by his grandfather.
Inspired by his grandfather who is a Hina doll craftsman, Gojo also dreams to become a Hina doll craftsman. Always criticized by his friends for playing with girl dolls, Gojo has a reclusive character. All this until he met his crush Marin with whom he decided to work together and get closer to her.
Marin Kitagawa is quite an extrovert and is studying in the same class as Wakana. Marin falls in love with Wakana after their debut cosplay. The story continues as several other characters add up in the school life and Wakana treads his journey as the lead.
The series also has some characters who make the series better. They are Sajuna Inui who is a cosplayer and a youthful character. Then there is Shinju Inui, Sajuna’s younger sister. Shinju is a junior in the school but bigger than her older sister.
The fans received the series with votes ranking the series sixth in the “Comics category” in the fourth edition of Tsugini Kuru Manga Taisho, which was organized by Da Vinci magazine.
Readers in the 2020 edition of the Kono Manga Ga Sugoi! ranked the series sixteenth. Referring to some collected survey results of 1,100 professional bookstore employees, My Dress-Up Darling was ranked third in the recommended comics of 2020.
