What was the verdict in the UK Libel case?
Despite successfully proving aspects of a defamation claim, Depp’s case against The Sun was ultimately dropped because the jury found the publication’s comments about the actor to be “substantially true” after hearing Heard’s testimony.
Needless to say, this was a significant victory not only for The Sun but for publishers in general, as it will negatively impact Depp as he pursues his other legal challenges.
“This request is rejected”, the court said in its decision. “The plaintiff was unsuccessful in his defamation action. Although he proved the necessary elements of his cause of action for defamation, the defendants demonstrated that what they published in the sense that I found the words to carry was substantially true.
“I have reached these conclusions after considering in detail the 14 incidents on which the defendants rely as well as the overall considerations which the plaintiff has argued that I should take into account. In these circumstances, Parliament declared that an accused had a full defence.
