Sounds like an entertaining and funny story isn’t it?. Directed by Domee Shi, Turning Red stars Rosalie Chang, Sandra Oh, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Ava Morse, and Wai Ching Hu.

What Is The Movie About?

Set in Toronto, 2002, Turning Red begins by showing a 13-year-old girl named Mei who is trying to be an obedient mother for her overprotective mother Ming and has a secretive teenage life that her mother is not aware of, such as her love for a boy band named 4 Town.

In the movie, we can see Mei struggling to balance two different life that she is leading as the obedient daughter and a new teenage girl. Mei has three friends named Miriam, Priya, and Abby, who is aware of the real Mei and her likings.

Mei has a crush on a boy and she tries to hide it from her overprotective mother. But one day, her mother finds out about Mei’s crush and goes to the extent of embarrassing her in front of her crush and in the place he is working.  Mei becomes furious about her mother embarrassing her in front of everyone and goes to bed sad and angry.

When Mei woke up the next day, she was turned into a giant red panda and when she saw herself in the new form, Mei gets panicked and become scared of herself.

When her mother comes and asks about what is the matter, Mei hides from her mother and calms herself. When she calms her emotions, she turns back into her normal self and that is when she understood that it is her extreme feelings that are causing her to become a red panda.

Mei plans to control her emotions and feelings for the rest of the day, but things didn’t go as planned. When Mei finds that her mother is spying on her in school, she gets furious again and turns into a red panda again. Panicked students run away from the red panda, so Mei runs back to her home in the chaos.

Her parents came to know about the red panda and then her father reveals a secret. Mei’s ancestor Sun Yee had the permission to transform into a red panda to protect their daughters and this has been running in the female lineage of her family when they reach puberty. Her mother provides a solution for Mei’s struggle with the red panda.

They say that a ritual should be done in order for them to release themselves from transforming into red pandas. Turns out the ritual should be done on the same day Mei’s favorite boy band 4 Town comes in her town for a concert.

So What Happens In The End?

Mei decides that she will perform the ritual instead of going to the concert but her heart tells her to go for the concert. Performing the ritual, Mei who was almost getting rid of the red panda completely turns herself into a red panda and runs away for the concert. Mei’s mother and grandmother follow her and wreak chaos at the concert.

The ritual takes place and all other women of Mei’s family get rid of their red panda transformation except for Mei. Mei decides that she doesn’t want to lose her red panda self and refuses to let go of it.

The film has a happy ending where we can see that Mei and her mother’s relationship has been improved to a healthy one and she is living and enjoying her life as a teenager and as a red panda.

Apart from being entertainment, Turning Red showcases a child hitting puberty in a strict household and her acceptance of herself and self-love. The ending displays that Mei refuses to live her life by following her mother’s rule and standing up for her true self.
